Lower School Environmental Club Launches “Save Our Earth” Book

Baldwin’s Lower School clubs for students in Grades 4 and 5 have been busy and engaged throughout this academic year. The 26 members of the Environmental Club have worked in groups on a variety of projects to share information about how we can better care for our environment; they have created environmental scavenger hunts and Jeopardy games as well as a campaign for increased use of reusable silverware in the dining room.

A small group of students demonstrated their passion for helping the environment through writing a book titled, “Save OUR Earth.” Students showed further initiative by reaching out to PennEnvironment, a state-wide, non-partisan environmental advocacy group. The group partnered with the students to organize a “book launch" at Baldwin where the Enviro Club authors presented “Save OUR Earth” to local elected officials, Rep. Tim Briggs and Sen. Amanda Cappelletti, who are both supportive of efforts to help the environment.

The students focused on climate change, deforestation, endangered animals, pollution, energy usage, managing our oceans and waste disposal. See the book here.

During the book launch, Rep. Briggs and Sen. Cappelletti spoke with our entire Enviro Club about why and how they entered politics and answered students’ questions about how they can continue to help take care of the Earth. Students asked thoughtful questions and left the event with an eagerness to continue to find ways to use their voices to help the environment.

The Environment Club is just one of Baldwin’s Lower School clubs, which are vibrant spaces where students grow as thinkers, teammates and leaders. The energy, initiative and creativity Baldwin’s 4th and 5th graders bring to these experiences reflect their deepening love of learning and their desire to make a difference in their communities. Whether advocating for the environment, diving into literature or tackling complex math challenges, our students are demonstrating the confidence, curiosity and leadership that will serve them well in Middle School and beyond.
