As I enter my 17th year in middle school administration and my fifth year at The Baldwin School, I am more confident that an all-girls education, especially at the middle school level, is essential to our girls’ future. Although we don’t know what the future will hold, I see it daily. At the same time, I walk the halls of our middle school, visit classes, and talk to students, faculty, parents and alumnae. The Baldwin School provides essential skills, opportunities and experiences for our girls to become confident women.
As you know, middle school is a crucial transition between lower school and upper school. Not only are middle school students physiologically changing, there are a number of changes to their socioemotional needs, academic development and expectations from peers and adults. At The Baldwin School, we understand these changes and are able to leverage our small learning community to meet each of our Baldwin girls where they are, providing the care, attention and support they will need through their adolescent years.
Our middle school curriculum allows our Baldwin girls to build on their foundational skills and knowledge from elementary and lower schools and be more prepared for the in-depth coursework they will encounter in our upper school. We introduce our middle school girls to subjects like physics, algebra, biology, cultural anthropology, world history, classical and romance languages, computer science, graphic arts, performing arts, physical education and Inter-Ac athletics. These subjects lay a solid foundation for future learning because our middle school faculty are content area experts and value middle school teaching and learning. Any day of the week, you will see our girls actively participating in class discussions, collaborative group work and independent enrichment with our faculty guiding them.
The middle school at the Baldwin School is not just about academics, but also about personal growth and development. We provide a supportive environment where girls can explore their interests, develop self-advocacy and leadership skills, and begin to identify potential academic and career goals. Middle school is more about experiences than expertise, and we ensure our girls have a variety of opportunities to experience fun, team building, community service and learning beyond our Baldwin gates.
We also understand that our girls manage other responsibilities and changes in and outside school. As a result, we leverage our advisory program, deans and middle school counselors to offer guidance and assist our girls in building the interpersonal skills that will serve them throughout their lives. We have also partnered with The Social Institute to help our students and their families navigate the influences of technology and make positive decisions when using devices.
Whether you are considering The Baldwin School for your middle school daughter or your daughter is continuing her educational journey as a middle school Baldwin Bear, our middle school faculty and staff look forward to providing her with the best middle school experience.
All the best,
Dr. Shauna A. Carter
Director of Middle School
