CS&E Department Showcases Innovation at Leading AI and Cybersecurity Conferences

Although school was out of session for the summer, the Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E) Department was actively engaged in presenting groundbreaking work at multiple Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity conferences. These presentations underscore Baldwin's commitment to fostering intellectual rigor, creativity and a global perspective in our students.
  • CS&E Teacher Dr. Thomas Heverin presented “Girl Ethical Hackers: Global Impact in Cybersecurity via Experiential Learning” at the 2024 International Coalition of All Girls Schools conference. He shared real-world impacts from his Upper School "Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking" class, where students made significant contributions to global cybersecurity efforts.
  • CS&E Department Chair and Teacher Addison Lilholt presented “Mapping Software-Engineering Industry AI Use to Software-Engineering Curriculum: Developing the AI-Use Framework at the 2nd Symposium on AI Opportunities and Challenges (SAIOC) Conference. He discussed the integration of industry AI practices into K-12 software engineering curricula, setting the stage for future-focused education.
  • Dr. Heverin also presented “AI for Empowering Novices in the Naturalistic Decision-Making Domain of Cybersecurity” at SAOIC, exploring how Baldwin students utilized AI to tackle expert-level cyber security tasks, demonstrating their ability to apply both analytical and intuitive cognition.
  • Dr. Heverin, Mr. Lilholt and Lower School Library Media Specialist Emily Woodward presented their collaborative research titled “Evaluating Cybersecurity Class Activities Based on the Cognitive Continuum Theory: An Exploratory Case Study,” at the 2024 European Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security. The study revealed how Baldwin students combined library-developed information-seeking skills with advanced cognitive approaches to excel in ethical hacking and malware analysis.
These achievements not only highlight the innovative work happening within the CS&E Department but also reflect Baldwin’s mission to equip students with the skills and confidence to lead and innovate on a global scale.
