Nina Heverin-Alvarado ’26 Wins Widener High School Leadership Award

Baldwin congratulates Nina Heverin-Alvarado ’26, a winner of the High School Leadership Award, which is presented by Widener University, in partnership with NBC 10. The award acknowledges and honors the region’s best and brightest future leaders who take it upon themselves to make a significant difference in their schools and communities. The program recognizes students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrate courage and leadership — those who stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools.

Nina is a standout student whose leadership, compassion and drive are felt throughout the community. A junior now, Nina has been at Baldwin since Lower School, and over the years, she has consistently demonstrated what it means to lead by example. Whether it's through her academic pursuits, her dedication to service, or her role as an athlete, Nina continues to set the bar high for herself and those around her.

As Upper School Director Christie Reed reflects, Nina’s journey at Baldwin has been anything but ordinary. "Nina's class has faced a lot of challenges," she shares, referring to the unprecedented disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. "In 6th grade, they were sent home early when the pandemic hit. And while Baldwin was back in person for the 2020-21 school year, many students were learning virtually while a small group remained on campus." Despite these difficulties, Nina chose to rise above the negativity and make a positive impact. "When Nina could have joined in with the frustrations and negativity, she chose to lead differently," says Christie. "She became a cornerstone of her class, helping to hold the group together during those challenging years." As a result, Nina’s kindness, empathy and leadership have helped to create an inclusive and supportive environment for her peers, even in the face of adversity. Her leadership shines through in how she brings out the best in others.

Beyond her academic achievements and leadership in the classroom, Nina’s dedication to service is equally impressive. As a member of Baldwin's Service League, Nina has played an integral role in organizing and leading community service projects. "Nina is an incredible asset to Baldwin," shares her advisor, who has worked closely with Nina for three years. "Her leadership and kindness really shine through in how she supports her peers and promotes school events like the fashion show, which raises awareness and funds for The Wardrobe. It's inspiring to see students like her making a positive impact in their community."

For Nina, service isn’t just a way to give back — it’s a core part of who she is. Through events like the fashion show, which helps provide clothing to people in need, Nina has demonstrated her commitment to uplifting others. Whether she's organizing a school event or lending a hand to a fellow student, her passion for service is clear in all that she does.

In addition to her academic and service endeavors, Nina is also deeply involved in track and field. As a member of Baldwin's track team, Nina has embraced the discipline, teamwork and resilience required of a successful athlete. "Being part of a team like this requires a lot of dedication and balance," Christie explains. "Nina motivates her teammates not only through her own performances but by encouraging others to push themselves as well. She's a true team player." Nina’s involvement in track speaks to her ability to balance multiple commitments while maintaining a positive and motivating presence on and off the field. Her teammates look up to her not just for her athletic abilities, but for the encouragement and leadership she provides.

As Nina continues to make her mark at Baldwin, it’s clear that her influence will extend far beyond her high school years. Whether through her leadership, her compassion or her unwavering commitment to her community, Nina is shaping up to be a leader who will inspire others for years to come. “Nina is a true example of what it means to lead with integrity and heart,” Christie says.

Nina will receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if she chooses to enroll at Widener University as a freshman for undergraduate studies, where she would be named an Apogee Scholar. As an Apogee Scholar, students participate in a leadership development program at the Oskin Leadership Institute, which includes earning a Widener leadership certificate and participating in a variety of on-campus leadership development activities.
